The Aurora Fossil Museum, founded in 1976, is a non-profit fossil education resource center. Our museum's mission is to increase knowledge of the geology and paleontology of the coastal plains of North Carolina. We accomplish this task through exhibits, outreach programs and field studies. Our own fossil pile, afffectionately dubbed the 'Pit of the Pungo', is an unlimited source of Miocene age fossils donated by our local phosphate mine. In these fossil rich soils, one may find the remains of ancient sharks, whales, bony fish, corals, shells and other invertebrates. Our staff will willingly provide personal assistance and other resources to help you identify your finds. Bring a garden trowel or sifter and plastic bags, spend the day collecting with us, and take home a piece of the past.

Absolutely the best kept secret in eastern NC. I recommend anyone with children go! And even if you don't have children go!!! There is something for everyone! Digging for shark teeth is fun and therapeutic( 4me anyway!) Plus they have a great museum of ALL KINDS OF FOSSILS not just Shark teeth. They actually have several buildings that hold information. Make sure and visit the black light room! In April, every Sunday will have an event. And end of May is their annual festival, which I recommend 100%! The festival has a wonderful auction with great prehistoric treasures to bid on and beautiful pieces of art made from incredible objects. We visit this place many times a year!! You can even dig on Sunday's- however the museum is closed. Have fun!!! There is no way not too!!!!!

A quaint little free museum with a lot to see. The layout is a little rough to navigate if there are a lot of people visiting, but that isn't that surprising given the space. The best part is there is a park across the street where young and old fossil enthusiasts can excavate for locally deposited fossils brought from the local mine. Although the museum is worth the trip, there is little else to see in Aurora.

This place was amazing! Lots of neat fossils from this area and a fossil dig. Plus, bonus, it's all free. They have merchandise and donations to fund them. It's not far from New Bern either. Great family fun
